Why Barcelona is still one of the best cities in Europe

By Ida Hummeluhr · 25 October 2026

Barcelona is often talked about as a city with too many visitors. And yes, some streets are busy. But there is a reason everyone wants to go: few cities in Europe combine so much in one place — and when you know where to go, it is still wonderful.

City and beach in one

Not many big cities let you spend the morning among world-famous buildings and the afternoon with your feet in the sand. In Barcelona, the Mediterranean is part of daily life, and that relaxed coastal rhythm runs through the whole city.

Architecture like nowhere else

Gaudí's work — from the Sagrada Família to the curving façades of the Eixample — makes Barcelona unlike any other city. But it is not only the icons: the medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter and the wide, elegant boulevards are just as much part of its charm.

A city made for eating

From tapas and vermouth to bustling food markets and long dinners that start late, Barcelona is a city that takes food seriously — and makes it social. Eating well here is not about luxury; it is about knowing where the locals go.

Every neighbourhood has its own mood

Step a few streets away from the busiest areas, and Barcelona changes completely. Each neighbourhood has its own squares, cafés and atmosphere, and that is where the city feels most alive. The trick is simply knowing where to look — and when to go.
